Mount Fuji
Waterlilies 43.  View at Dawn in Kai Province

Well, that explains it.

First light lit water and rooftop,

Left the people dark--we spot their hats,

As they straggle out of the inn,

But the atmosphere has mired them in tar,

And these fogbanks simply slice across

The middle world, leaving us unsure

If water is air, wondering if these black stripes are shadows,

Ridges, or reflections. A throwaway,

This print raises the count.

If the title's 36, how come we get 46?

This picture proves the extras aren't all bonuses,

And the ugly octopus at the top we know only by the title

Of the series, a shallow mystery, an erased Mount Fuji.
